What is it / what is the condition? Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues that hold up the organs in your pelvis. When these get weak or stretched, an organ can slip out of place and push into the vagina. This is called pelvic organ prolapse. There are a few kinds. A cystocele is when the bladder drops. A rectocele is when the rectum bulges. Uterine prolapse is when the uterus drops down. Vaginal vault prolapse is when the top of the vagina falls, often after a past hysterectomy. Common causes are childbirth, weight gain, aging, menopause, heavy lifting, and long-term coughing or straining.
What is the procedure? Prolapse repair is surgery that lifts organs back into place and makes the support stronger. Some repairs are done through the vagina with stitches (called colporrhaphy or native tissue repair). Others are done with small cuts in the belly using laparoscopic or robotic surgery, such as sacrocolpopexy, which lifts and holds the vagina in place. In some cases, a mesh (a soft support material) or your own tissue is used to give support. For women who no longer want vaginal intercourse, a procedure that closes part of the vagina (colpocleisis) may be an option.
Why and when is it used? You may want prolapse repair if you feel a bulge in the vagina, pelvic pressure or heaviness, pain with sex, trouble emptying the bladder or bowel, or leaking urine. Some women try non-surgical steps first, like a pessary (a small device that supports the organs) or pelvic floor exercises. Surgery is often chosen when symptoms bother you or other steps have not helped.
What happens during it? Prolapse surgery is usually done under general anesthesia (medicine that keeps you fully asleep) or spinal anesthesia (numbing from the waist down). The surgeon repairs the weak areas and lifts the organs back into place. How long it takes depends on the type and number of repairs. Some women go home the same day, but many stay overnight.
Recovery. Most women take a few weeks to heal. You will likely be asked to avoid heavy lifting, hard exercise, and sex for about 6 weeks so the repair can heal. Healing is different for everyone. This surgery aims to ease bulging and pressure, but no result is guaranteed, and prolapse can sometimes come back. To ask about prolapse repair in Sherman, TX, call or text us at 903-957-0275.
