Why might a hysterectomy be recommended? Common reasons include heavy or painful periods that have not responded to other treatment, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, chronic pelvic pain, and certain precancerous or cancerous conditions. It is one option among several, and it is not always the first step.
Are there different types? Yes. Depending on your situation, surgery may remove just the uterus or also the cervix, and sometimes the ovaries or tubes. We only remove what is medically necessary, and we explain exactly what is planned and why.
What are the surgical approaches? Whenever it is safe, we use minimally invasive methods, vaginal, laparoscopic, or robotic (da Vinci) surgery, which use small incisions or none at all. These usually mean less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to your life than traditional open surgery.
Will I go into menopause? Not necessarily. If your ovaries are left in place, you will not go into surgical menopause, though you will no longer have periods and cannot become pregnant. If the ovaries are removed, we will discuss what to expect and how to manage it. If you are already past menopause, most women do not notice anything different after surgery with regards to hormones, but Dr. Cryer is happy to answer those questions during your preop appointment.
What is recovery like? Recovery depends on the approach, but minimally invasive surgery often means going home the same day or the next, with a return to light activity within a couple of weeks. We give you a clear recovery plan and stay available for questions.
