A closer look at abnormal cervical cell changes
A colposcopy (or colpo) is a procedure that uses a magnifying device to closely examine the cervix, usually following an abnormal Pap smear. It takes about 20 minutes and involves applying an acetic acid or iodine solution to highlight areas of concern, with a small biopsy taken if needed.
We recommend taking ibuprofen or naproxen prior to your appointment to minimize cramping. While findings from the colposcopy are available and discussed during the visit with your doctor, if biopsy(ies) are needed, those results are typically available within about a week.
If treatment is needed, options most often include LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) or a cone biopsy, depending on your specific results. Other options such as cryotherapy or laser treatment are less common for abnormal Pap smears.
