Vaginal Dryness & Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)

Understanding GSM symptoms and treatment options

If you've noticed vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, burning, irritation, urinary urgency, or recurrent urinary tract infections after menopause, you may be experiencing Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). GSM is one of the most common, but also one of the most underdiagnosed, conditions affecting women after menopause, caused by declining estrogen levels that thin and dry vaginal and urinary tissues.

Common symptoms include vaginal dryness and irritation, discomfort or pain during intercourse, burning or itching, and urinary symptoms such as urgency, frequency, or recurrent UTIs. We diagnose GSM through a review of your symptoms and a physical exam, and can tailor a treatment plan to your needs.

Effective treatments are available, and you don't have to accept these symptoms as a normal part of aging. Options range from vaginal moisturizers and lubricants to systemic OR localized hormone therapy and in-office treatments like MonaLisa Touch vaginal laser therapy. Call or text our office at 903-957-0275 to schedule a consultation. We see patients of all ages. Our board-certified gynecologists — Dr. Strobel and Dr. Cryer — and our team of nurse practitioners care for women across North Texas and Texoma.
