OVARIAN CYST REMOVAL (CYSTECTOMY) IN SHERMAN, TX

Ovary-sparing, minimally invasive cyst removal

Ovarian cyst removal, also called an ovarian cystectomy, is surgery to take out a cyst from your ovary while keeping the healthy ovary in place. At the office of G. DeAn Strobel, MD, PA in Sherman, TX, Dr. Karissa Cryer is a robotically-trained, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon who offers ovary-sparing ovarian cyst surgery for women across Grayson County and the Texoma area. If a cyst is large, painful, growing, or not going away, this procedure can help remove the problem while protecting as much of your ovary as possible.

What an ovarian cystectomy is. An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac on or in an ovary. Many cysts are harmless and go away on their own. When one does not, an ovarian cystectomy can remove just the cyst and leave the healthy ovary behind — this is what "ovary-sparing" means. It is different from an oophorectomy, which removes the whole ovary. Dr. Cryer will explain which option may fit you.

Why and when it is done. Not every cyst needs surgery; many are watched over time with exams and ultrasound. Your team may talk about surgery when a cyst is large, not going away after a few menstrual cycles, growing or changing, causing pain or pressure, or looking concerning on an imaging scan. Removing a cyst can also let the tissue be checked in a lab.

How it is done. Most removals are done in a minimally invasive way — through a few small cuts using a tiny camera and thin tools. Dr. Cryer is trained in both laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Compared with one large cut (open surgery), a minimally invasive approach often means less pain, smaller scars, and a faster recovery. Very large or concerning cysts may still need open surgery. Your surgeon will talk through the safest plan.

Recovery. Recovery is different for every person. After minimally invasive laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal, many women return to normal activities within about one to two weeks. Open surgery usually takes longer. Your team will give you clear instructions. Call or text 903-957-0275 to see if a cystectomy is right for you.
